3D Scanning

Both of our 3D scanning rigs are currently experimental.

For small scale 3D scanning, we are working with a Makerbot Digitizer. The Makerbot Digitizer is capable of scanning objects up to 8 inches in diameter and up to 8 inches high. A typical scan takes about 10 minutes. It will produce a watertight triangular mesh model in STL format suitable for further editing or 3D printing. The scans we are currently getting are fairly rough, but we expect this to improve over time. The best results so far are from matte plaster-like surfaces. Other objects and surface finishes have given mixed results. The scan does not capture colour data, only geometry.

We are also experimenting with large scale 3D scanning of people using an XBox Kinect and Skanect scanning software. This setup is capable of geometry only or texture-mapped colour scans. We hope to add a turntable to our setup in the near future.

Please contact us if you are interested in experimenting with us. And watch here for images of our test scans.
